Dr. Pushpa Mahapatro
Associate Professor
Coordinator of B.Sc. (Information Technology)
I was born in a small town in Odisha, into a family that valued discipline and exposure. My father served in the Army, which gave me the unique opportunity to experience life across diverse places like Hyderabad, Jhansi, and even Kashmir. These early experiences shaped my adaptability, curiosity, and openness to new cultures. After his retirement, we returned to Odisha, where I completed my education up to my Master’s degree.
Teaching, for me, was never a profession—it was a calling. As a child, I would eagerly play the role of a teacher, arranging my dolls, siblings, and friends as students, conducting imaginary classes with full enthusiasm. That passion stayed with me as I grew. Alongside academics, I nurtured hobbies like reading, coin collection, sewing, and knitting, which added creativity and patience to my personality.
Academically, I have always strived for excellence. I secured distinction in my post-graduation, completed my M.Phil. in Computer Science, and qualified the UGC NET examination through dedicated effort. I was a University Topper in my Graduation (Chemistry Honours) from Berhampur University, Odisha, and was also awarded a government scholarship for pursuing my MCA—milestones that reflect my commitment to learning. I also completed Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from Symbiosis International (Deemed University).
After marriage, I moved to Mumbai, where my professional journey as an educator truly began. I worked as a lecturer in several colleges before joining Vidyalankar School of Information Technology in 2007 as an Assistant Professor for B.Sc. IT and M.Sc. IT programs. Since then, my journey has been one of continuous growth, contribution, and connection.
As an educator, I believe in going beyond textbooks. I have actively organized and conducted guest lectures, industrial visits, pop quizzes, problem-based learning sessions, and group activities to make learning dynamic and relevant. I constantly strive to integrate emerging technologies into my teaching and have also initiated revenue-generating activities for the institution.
My role as a teacher extends far beyond the classroom. I take pride in building meaningful relationships with students—mentoring them not just academically but also supporting their extracurricular growth and personal development. This connection has helped me create a positive and lasting impact in their lives. I have also been invited as a resource person at various organizations, sharing my knowledge and experience.
Throughout my journey, I have been fortunate to learn from inspiring personalities like Dr. Radhakrishnan Pillai and others, who have taught me the importance of humility, continuous learning, and innovation. Industrial exposure has further enriched my understanding of real-world technological applications.
In my administrative roles, I have contributed as a member of the Final Year Project Quality Assurance Committee under the guidance of Makarand Deshpande, where I coordinated activities, identified team strengths, and ensured effective task allocation. As part of the NAAC team, I actively worked on Criteria II, fulfilling assigned responsibilities with dedication.
To sum up, my journey has been driven by passion, perseverance, and purpose. I am always ready to take on new responsibilities, bringing with me energy, innovative ideas, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference.
